What is Our Space? Part I. is the first gathering of Czech-based and international artists in a series intended to provoke new thought and directions among artists who have devoted their work to interacting with the city and society around them, and their audience. Special guests for this first edition are Boris Bakal of the remarkable Shadow Casters group of Zagreb and the Czech Republic’s Petr Šourek, founder of the Corrupt Tour travel agency.

Artists and curators concerned about interacting with the world around them have been breaking out. Aware that they have been operating in the artist “ghettos“ of arts institutions and preaching to the converted, over the last twenty years some of the most innovative minds have been developing radical ways to break out and make an impact. For such creators and facilitators even the various forms of contemporary site-specific arts practice haven’t been enough. Sometimes they reject artistic conventions, at other times they lend traditions new form and contexts. Sometimes they knowingly engage the media, at other times they focus completely on members of a community. Many have rejected state or corporate funding. Whether they inspire surprise and new thought in a community or a whole region, or the rapt attention of the media, or invoke the disdain and even retribution of those in power, the feeling is that these are the artists that are “back on track“.

What is the space – public, private, institutional - in which such innovators are operating? How are they reinterpreting space through their practice? What are origins of the techniques they are practicing? Which techniques work in which contexts? And where do we go from here?

Brainstorming is a conference technique of solving specific problems, amassing information, stimulating creative thinking, developing new ideas, etc., by unrestrained and spontaneous participation in discussion.
Organised by Motus Prague, producers of the Alfred ve dvoře Theatre in cooperation with The Prague Quadrenniale.
