MUTE / Cie des Pieds Perchés

Acrobatic performance
performance length: 50 min
no language barrier
Most adults older than 30 cannot hear sounds with a frequency of 18-21kHz, but that doesn’t mean those sounds don’t exist. Mute reveals what tends to be hidden – a second world that keeps vibrating even when the first goes silent. Both are real, but each has its own rules. The important thing is to know when you have crossed the border from one world to the other, and in which world you currently find yourself.

In Mute, Swiss acrobats Stéphanie N’Duhirahe and Morgane Widmer, who engage in acrobatics on aerial ropes, explore the fine line between normalcy and madness. The performance was created on the basis of numerous interviews with Czech and foreign psychiatrists, psychologists, and people with mental illnesses. The interviews showed that the boundary between the two is more porous than might seem at first glance. How can we tell whether both worlds are equally real? Having solid ground under one’s feet is not the same as standing with both feet firmly planted firmly on the ground.

La Compagnie des Pieds Perchés was founded in 2009 by Swiss artists Morgane Widmer and Stéphanie N’Duhirahe. Their performances (Foutaise, 2010;Le Poids du Vide, 2013/2016; Peas in a Pod, 2015) work with the principles of New Circus, and both performers specialize in aerial rope acrobatics. Morgane Widmer graduated from the Superior School of Circus Arts (ESAC) in Brussels, Stéphanie N’Duhirahe studied at the École de Cirque de Québec. Their performances have been shown in Italy, Canada, France, and the Czech Republic (at the Cirk-UFF festival in Trutnov and at Letní Letná, KD Mlejn, and Alfred ve dvoře in Prague)

“We think through movement, speak through specific stories, express ourselves on the wild excesses of this world from various angles. We feel no need to moralize; irony is more up our alley and laughter comes naturally.”
